Raffia cut pile embroidery

A variety of  motifs, also used in house painting and ceramics, make a striking sampler. These are made in various sizes and shapes for ceremonial and everday use.

Condition: Very good.

Origin: Mbuti people. Ituri Forest. Northern Zaire.
Size: 27"X22"
Age: Unknown. Collected 3d quarter, 20th c.
Tree bark. Wooden frame.
Made by pounding bark, then drawn with natural pigments.

Made by Mbuti pygmy women, perhaps the original abstract artists, this has a feeling of syncopated rhythm as in a musical composition. Not many of these Mbuti cloths have been shown in the United States.

Of this group of three (two others follow) this is the only one seamed to make a tube (and therefore a skirt).

Note the border design. Each of the three has a distinctly different border design although the elements in the fields repeat themsevles in all three.

In each corner or this charming textile is a "boteh", the paisley pear motif celebrated in Persia and India and in vogue in Europe and America at the turn of the 19th-20th century.

Cotton Block-printed. Outlined by hand.
Lined in cotton in the same technique with a different design.

This is an authentic late 19th c. Persian domestic textile; the popular boteh design had spread across Europe and versions made in England and Scotland became known as "paisley" after the weaving town in Scotland of that name. Will make a lovely hanging or table cover.

Both the front and the back have a "boteh" motif. This charming textile could have been made as a crib quilt.

Made in an intricate technique requiring weaving,needlework and assemblage, these were in high demand in Europe (particularly prized as garments in France). Then Scotch (Paisley) and English weaving centers used the designs and format in making their successful Paisley products
