Wool kilim fragments pieced together and sewn on canvas. Wooden dowl.

Made by artist Gary Llamido for an exhibit of "Kilims Reformed".
Condition: Very good.

Cotton Outlined by hand, then printed with carved wooden blocks

In each corner or this charming textile is a "boteh", the paisley pear motif celebrated in Persia and India and in vogue in Europe and America at the turn of the 19th-20th century.
Condition: very good

Cotton Block-printed. Outlined by hand.
Lined in cotton in the same technique with a different design.

This is a charming use of the popular paisley design; a textile that would make a lovely hanging or table cover.

Materials: Cotton.
Condition: Excellent.
Pieced cotton front is appliqued. Printed cotton back.

Both the front and the back have a "boteh" motif, often called a Paisley design. This charming textile could have been made as a crib quilt.

Origin: Turfan, far Western China.
Condition: Unused.
Material: Silk thread.
This intricate technique has been woven in only a few areas of the world.
This black and white ikat with yellow selvages is made in Sinkiang province where
the Uighur women use it for their distinctive clothing. A very dramatic motif, found in paintings of robes from medieval times. The repeat is every 39”. .

Origin: Italy (?)
Condition: Some old stains.
Material: Warp is mercerized thread. Weft is hand spun cotton.
In an oasis in the desert two middle Eastern travelers (huntsmen?they have guns.)
are attacked. This scene might be based on a Persian legend. It would be a convers- ation piece as a hanging.

Eastern town. The man on the donkey and the standing man are in exotic dress, perhaps Uzbeks from Central Asia.

A voluptuous dancer (gypsy?) is watched by horsemen and camel riders.
Her tambourines lay on the corner of her rug. In the open market flowers, fruit and cakes are sold.

A regal young man is confronted by a young woman. The caption is FILS DU CHEIK. This tapestry seems to be taken from a movie poster from “Son of the Sheik” United Artists. 1926 in which Vilma Banky pleads with Rudolph Valentino. (See MPTV.netPhoto)

Origin: Mbuti people. Ituri Forest. Northern Zaire.
Size: 27"X22"
Age: Unknown. Collected 3d quarter, 20th c.
Tree bark. Wooden frame.
Made by pounding bark, then drawn with natural pigments.

Made by Mbuti pygmy women, perhaps the original abstract artists, this has a feeling of syncopated rhythm as in a musical composition. Not many of these Mbuti cloths have been shown in the United States.

A variety of  motifs, also used in house painting and ceramics, make a striking sampler. These are made in various sizes and shapes for ceremonial and everday use.
