SMALL RUGS

A Turkish cicim with centuries old design; a Luri rukorsi, once used as a communal 'lap robe" and a kilim from the nearby Bakhtiyaris used as a clothes wrapper for the communal bath; a dowry kilim from Afghanistan; a Chinese knotted pictorial rug. From the Western Hemisphere an abstract rug in natural colors; an amusing Andean pictorial and an early trading post Navajo rug.


SMALL RUGS - TURKEY

Kecimihtsu kilim. Prayer cicim

Origin: Turkey. Central Anatolia , near Konya
Size: 4'8"X5'2"
Age: early 20th c.
Wool. Plain weave with (cicim) brocading. 
Condition: very good.

This cicim design with its stacked mihrabs ending in cypress trees has been woven in this village for centuries. The cypress tree is a religious symbol for the dervish sects of the region appearing on gravestones and on their pointed caps. A collectable kilim.

Wool warp.wool weft.
Dovetailed tapestry weave.
Condition: Very good.

Brazier cover-used as a communal lap robe to confine the heat while family members sat on sides of the brazier. The design on a camel field is a central cruciform or "eye of life" shape.

Would make a striking hanging and is sturdy enough for the floor, a lovely rug for an entry hall..

Very fine wool.
Double interlocked tapestry weave. Aprons are plain weave.

These were prized weavings on public display since they were used to carry clothes to and from the public bath. A collectable kilim.

Condition Excellent.

Twill weave. Reversible. Woven in two parts.

Woven in a peasant culture, this is a charming piece of folk art.
It could be used on the floor on top of a carpet, as a throw at the bottom of a bed or couch, or as a hanging.

Age: 3d quarter 20th c.
Wool.Double wefted warp. Vegetal dyes..
Brocading on plain weave. Soumak details.

Condition: Very good.

The overall design motif is the rams' horn, an important symbol in Turkmen and Uzbeki textiles.
This was probably hung as a divider during the marriage ceremonies and remained as a separator between bride and groom's sections of the tent for the tradition of a year.

Wool knotted pile on cotton foundation
This is a fragment; a full medallion from an antique Chinese carpet.
In lustrous wool of deepest blue with lighter blue and ivory motifs of traditional eternal knot and garlands.

This is a charming pictorial rug, its subject matter taken from an antique screen, of a elderly rider in a traditional landscape..

SMALL RUGS - NORTH AFRICA

Saddle rug, called Hanbel
Origin: Morocco. Middle Atlas mountains
Size: 3'X5'
Age: 3d quarter 20th c.
Wool. Some cotton in the supplementary weft.
Weft faced. Weft substitution weave.

This was woven by a woman of the Zemmour tribe. The motifs in the intricate patterning have meaning for the weavers; the zigzag motifs are symbols of water.
Condition:Excellent

Origin: Mexico, San Miguel de Allende
Age: Woven in 1973.
Size: 3'2X5'3"
Wool.
Undyed natural sheep colors. Dovetailed tapestry weave.

The abstract design reflects the training of the weaver, an American living in San Miguel, but the shapes are influenced by Mexican motifs.
Condition:Excellent

Age: 3d quarter (?) 20th c.
Wool weft, Woolcotton warp

Tapestry weave.
Condition: very good

Woven in a village in the Andes, possibly by a Cayamarca or Ayacucho weaver. The Indian woman is depicted in her verdant landscape surrounded by mountains. This charming folk art rug would make a striking hanging in a public, professional or residential space.

Origin: Southwest USA

Age: c. 1905
Wool. Tapestry Weave
Condition: very good.

The two stacked diamond medallions and the other symbols in the field are typical Navajo design elements; the border might have been influenced by Oriental Rug designs - which the trading posts, particularly the Hubley Trading Post, asked for from the weaver.
