This type of kilim was often used in the rugged and remote Caucasian mountains as the top or cover of an ox or horse cart. Now it should be a beautiful hanging or a rug in a lightly trafficked area where it could be seen in the clear and fully appreciated.

In this kilim we see the colors of early pile rugs of Oushak,
here all from beautiful natural dyes of ochre, gold and turquoise,
greens and white. There is a possibility that it was woven in
Manastir.
The meander border displays trefoils at its
ends and lath hooks at its sides. A collector's rug to be preserved.
Condition: Full restoration difficult;should be backed..

This dynamic kilim with its diamonds within diamonds within angular outlining medallions is characteristic of the kilims of the Qashqai tribes.Qashqai women spin and weave when they are not engaged in their many other domestic chores whether in their summer high pasture encampment or in winter quarters.

This is a very unusual, perhaps unique, weaving. The symbols and design relate to rituals in the culture or these pastoral people; the radiating sun "trees", the rams, and the "wine glass" border.

Bands of warp faced plain weave and bands of warp substitution weave. The narrow bands are sewn together after they are taken from the loom.
Condition: excellent
The decorative bands that make up this sturdy rug are sewn together to make rugs for the floor of the tent, like this handsome Ghujeri. The bands are made on a ground loom consisting of four sticks in the earth, portable because the Turkmen are semi-nomadic people.

Carpets from the Oases towns of Eastern Turkestan were called Samarkand since Samarkand was one of the largest trading centers in Central Asia on the Silk Route. The design elements derive both from Turkmen carpets (the octogonal center motif is a modification of a Turkmen gul) as are the six wreath motifs) and from Chinese textiles (in this case the outer border).There are written accounts of fine carpets woven in these oases as long ago as the 7th c. when a Buddhist pilgrim noted their manufacture in Khotan and Kashgar.

Double interlocked tapestry weave.
Features of a dark brown or black field with floral motifs with a floral border are characteristic of the kilims of Bessarabia, an area that was once a part of Romania and now appears on no map. Kilims like this were woven in monasteries for the grand houses of the "boyars".

Dark ground kilims with floral motifs were woven in the Victorian era in many parts of Europe, the Balkans and Russia.The weavers oten copied fashionable designs from Western Europe as seem in embroidery pattern books, even on perfume and wine bottle labels.
These are very collectible kilims.

A similar kilim is in the Museum Ponislavlja in Pirot. The director of the Museum has sent us information that the tulip design motif is locally called "tongue of the mother-in-law".
This beautiful and collectible kilim should grace an important wall.

These gay "folk art" rugs always have motifs of gazelles. In
this redeyev the small gazelles march across eight different
red, black and ivory bands.
This is sturdy for floor use or it could be a marvellous
hanging.

This traditional diamond motif was woven in an oasis (oudref) in the Tunisian desert where "in each brown-earth dwelling one or more looms are to be found..the women work at them without let up in all seasons, carding, spinning, weaving from sunrise to sunset. "

Woven on an upright loom on the Navajo reservation in Arizona,
this is a Transitional weaving, a design made as a wearing blanket,
then sold by the weaver probably through the Trading Post. Note
the Lazy Lines"revealing the tapestry technique.

Banded plain weave with extra center warps, a distinctive feature
of Rio Grandes at that period..
Condition: Very good.
Woven in the Spanish Colonial culture in our Southwest, this
banded blanket is part of an important tradition. Rio Grande
blankets were originally used as wearing blankets during the
day and for bedding at night. A beautiful, collectable textile.

The 1930s were a period of emerging nationalism in Mexico. The symbols of Mayan and other native cultures became prominent. Mexican folk are became known internationally. This serape is part of that fok art tradition.
