This kilim would hang nicely over a bed, couch or desk. It is slightly curved following the way in which the weaver(a Hakkari woman) tied the warp.

A village kilim that would add charm to any interior. The bird-like motif in the border is a traditional reference to the vulture.

This style of kilim was often used in the rugged and remote Caucasian mountains as the top or cover of an ox or horse cart. Now it should be a beautiful hanging or a rug in a lightly trafficked area.

Age:  approximately 125 - 150 years old
Wool. Tightly spun.
Slit tapestry weave. Reversible..

In this kilim we see the colors of early pile rugs of Oushak, in beautiful natural dyes of ochre, gold and turquoise, greens and white. Possibly woven in Manastir.

A collector's rug to be preserved.
Condition: it should be backed..

Origin: Iran. Kerman area.

Wool pile on Cotton oundation (Persian knot).

Vase carpet. A classical design of upright vase and volumes of flowers. Called Kerman Laver. Very charming carpet-cannot be used in trafficked area. Best on a wall.

Condition: Over all wear. No holes.

Twill weave. Made in two parts.

Beautiful saturated colors from natural dyes.
Probably made for the weaver's dowry and displayed in the black tent. See HALI:Issue 140. P.72

Condition: Very good.

A dynamic kilim; diamonds within amonds outlining medallions - characteristic of the kilims of Qashqai weavers working in summer in high pasture encampments or in their winter quarters.

Size: 3'10"X7'10" . Made in five panels. Soumak wrapping and brocading on plain weave ground. Wool on cotton ground.

This is a very unusual, perhaps unique, weaving. The radiating "tree of life"s, the repeated rams, and the "wine glass" border are age old symbols of their culture.

The white background of the border with its running "dragon" motif dramatically contrasts with the three diamond medallions of the field. A collectible kilim.

Bands of warp faced plain weave and bands of warp substitution weave. The bands serve to surround the yurt. Some such as thisare sewn together to be used on the floor of the yurt.

Chain stitch embroidery.
Condition: excellent.
Portuguese embroidered carpets were renowned in the 18th and 19th centuries. This charming emroidered rug was probably commissioned by an interior designer for a client.

Called "Bessarabian"
Origin: Moldavia (?) Eastern Europe
Size: 5'5"X9'2"
Age: Dated and signed: 1939
Warp is cotton. Weft is wool.
Double interlocked tapestry weave.

Dark brown or black field with floral motifs and floral borders are characteristic of the kilims of Bessarabia, an area that was once a part of Romania and now appears on no map. These kilims like this were woven in monasteries for the grand houses of the "boyars".

A similar kilim is in the Museum Ponislavlja in Pirot.  The director of the Museum tells us that the tulip motif is locally called "tongue of the mother-in-law".

This beautiful kilim should grace an important wall.

The fire symbol set on the red field is the mystery of this pretty kilim.  Is the fire symbol Zoroastrian? Masonic? The floral design could have been copied from a 19th c European pattern.

Probably made by a weaver of the Zemmour tribe. This hanbel is finely woven.

Size: 5'5"X9'2"
Age: Mid 20th c.
Wool warp..Wool and cotton weft (white is cotton).  Weft substitution weave (a kind of brocading) and dovetailed tapestry weave.                            
Condition: Very good.

A gay "folk art" rug with motifs of gazelles marching across the red/orange, black and ivory bands.
Sturdy for floor use or a vivid hanging.

An art deco design, perhaps copied from a magazine of the period.  Bisat is the local name for traditional flat-weaves woven in villages on the Nile near Cairo.

Warp-faced plain weave bands and warp substitution weave bands; woven separately, sewn together off the loom. .

This heavy weaving is made to be used as a divider between the womens' and the  mens' section of the black tent of the Bedouins.

Woven in an oasis (oudref) in the Tunisian desert "in each brown-earth dwelling one or more looms are to be found..the women work at them without let up in all seasons, carding, spinning, weaving from sunrise to sunset.  "

Banded plain weave with extra center warps, a defiining feature.
Condition: Very good.
Woven in the Spanish Colonial culture, Rio Grande blankets were originally used as wearing blankets during the day and for bedding at night. A collectible textile.
