The dramatic juxtaposition of color is striking in this kilim panel. It would be a handsome hanging over a couch or bed or could hang vertically as a room divider .
Condition: It is slightly curved as a result of the way in which the weaver tied the warp.

Signed ESMA, the folk art quality of this kilim is enhanced by the change of background color towards the bottom. Probably woven by a semi-nomadic weaver who might have changed the color when she ran out of the brown yarn at the summer grazing camp (yayla)- away from her winter village.

This intricate compsition demands considerable skill on the part of the weavers requiring mastery of technique and memory. Notice that the more intricate side of the design is the side that isi joined; this exhibits one of the mysteries of kilim magic. These, called Rashwan, are prized kilims.

Condition: Poor but stabilized.
A powerful design, its motifs stretching back beyond its weavers knowledge. The panel on the bottom (seen here on the left) shows imagery of predatory birds, widely used symbols in Near Eastern textiles. The dark brown in the borders is an indication of its age.

Warp is cotton. Weft is wool.
Double interlocked tapestry weave.
Features of a dark brown or black field with floral motifs with a floral border are characteristic of the kilims of Bessarabia, an area that was once a part of Romania and now appears on no map. Kilims like this were woven in monasteries for the grand houses of the "boyars".

Great annual fairs in the 19th century attracted merhants from the entire Ottoman Empire.This design, with its small geometrisized floral motifs, is characteristic of the fine"Sarkoy" kilims traded there.The preference for red in folk art throughout Eastern Europe apparently derives from the belief that red kept away demons. This is a very beautiful kilim that would enhance any room.

Condition: Excellent.
Known as "palace" dhurries these beautifully woven cotton dhurries were made for grand rooms of rajahs and high officials or to order for British colonials. The background is a lovely light denim blue (see thumbnail). An identical dhurrie appears in "The Unappreciated Dhurrie", David Black, 1982; the book also has a 1907 photo of weavers making a dhurrie with this design at a jail in Bombay(many dhurries were woven by jail workers).

Plain weave with spot brocading and twining. Woven in six strips,
assembled off the loom.The black and white section is also woven
separately (called Cigarette).
Condition: very good.
This was used as a tent divider hung horozontally in the tent..
Specific designs for different tribes; this one was probably
woven by men of the Peul tribe.The indigo blue dye is native
and highly valued.
A similar one called "wedding blanket" is in the Museum de Kulturen,
Basel.

The design elements of the zigzag, triangle and diamond also appear frequently in High Atlas architecture and pottery. The rugs are called glaoua by merchants in the souks of Marrakech because they were first made under the rule of El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakesh.

Hanbels of this dimension were blanket/rugs
calculated to cover three or four people sleeping on pile rugs.
This is a traditional Zemmour design of alternating bands of
deep red plain weave and pattern bands of great intricacy -
and variety.

These design motifs are used by many tribal groups throughout
the Middle Atlas mountain range and are known to the weavers
by names in their own Berber dialects. This was probably
made by a Beni Mgild tribeswoman.

Condition: Uneven tension creates changes in
width.
Woven in the plain near Marrakech. Weaver could have been from
the Rehamna or Chiadma tribes noted for very individual and
free wheeling designs. This rug should be hung on a wall where
its rhythmic effect can be appreciated.
